Secretary General of the Council of Europe hopes for Belarus’ membership
Thorbjørn Jagland hopes that our country joins the European Convention on Human Rights.
The European Union is joining the European Convention on Human Rights now and will join the European Charter on Human Rights, interfax.by quotes Jagland. “If it happens, all the countries on the European continent (except for Belarus) and the EU as a corporate body will be within one organization with single standards and conventions. However, I am hoping that Belarus will also become a member of the Council of Europe, ” Jagland said.
Belarus is the only European state that is not a member of the Council of Europe. Our country will have to abolish the death penalty in order to join it.
