Severin: Situation with human rights in Belarus has not improved for 4 years
"My common impression is that there have been no significant progress, or rather no progress at all, in the sphere of human rights since then. Alongside with that, there have been certain economic and social changes which, I hope, will eventually cause political ones", – informed the deputy of the European Parliament Adrian Severin, to the European Radio for Belarus.
In 2004 – 2007 the Romanian expert was the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Belarus. His reports were dedicated to civic, political, economic, social and cultural rights in the country. "Belarusian government took into consideration none of the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur... Belarusian political system is incompatible with the human rights concept set in the Charter and international agreements on human rights", — stated in the Adrian Severin's report -2006.
The then Chairman of the Belarusian delegation in the UNO Siarhej Alejnik called Severin's activity "an attempt to tar Belarus' reputation". The Press-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andrej Papou stated there had been no grounds for a mandate of a Special Rapporteur in Belarus.
Belarusian authorities never let Adrian Severin to Belarus throughout the whole term he served as a Special Rapporteur and refused to cooperate with him point-blank.
