Spain issues arrest warrant for former China leader Jiang Zemin
He and ex-PM Li Peng may be arrested when they go abroad.
The Spanish court has ordered to arrest the politicians on suspicion of genocide of Tibetans, Reuters reports.
Two groups of expatriate Tibetans and a monk (all of them are Spanish citizens now) have made use of Spanish laws. The local laws allow prosecuting foreigners on suspicion of human rights violations committed abroad.
Beijing reacted to Spain’s accusations, RBK reports. China called the decision a groundless interference in its internal affairs.
Chinese troops invaded Tibet in 1950 and took control over it. The Dalai Lama has to flee from Tibet after an unsuccessful coup nine years later. Local inhabitants want the region to be independent and organize protest actions regularly. 120 adherents of Tibet’s independence have committed suicide by self-immolation since 2009.
