Ukraine wants to cut Charnobyl exclusion zone three times
A biosphere reserve is planned immediately around the zone.
The Ministry of Environment of Ukraine plans to reduce the exclusion zone around the Charnobyl nuclear power plant and limit its radius to 10 kilometers. This was stated by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Igor Shevchenko.
At present, the zone has the radius of 30 kilometers. After its reduction, the biosphere reserve can be set up in the remaining part, where specialized studies of flora and fauna will be conducted.
Shevchenko also said that he had signed the relevant documents, and now they have applied for approval of the Ministry of Justice. After that, there will be issued a special decree of the president, ru.delfi.lt reports.
The exclusion zone is the name of the territory where free access is forbidden due to its intense contamination after the Charnobyl accident. In the first year after the accident, it was called the 30-kilometer zone.
