US pensioner detained in Minsk over ice-cream for opposition supporters
Musician and writer Leanid Zubarau brought ice-cream to the activists who were collecting signatures for Anatol Lyabedzka.
Well-known Belarusian musician and writer Leanid Zubarau was detained near Minsk GUM on Wednesday. He was detained for bringing ice-cream to the picketers collecting signatures for leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka, minskby.com reports.
As soon as he brought ice-cream to the picketers, policemen approached him. They accuse the writer of ‘swearing’ and asked him to follow them. Zubarau refused and they wrung his hands and delivered him to the police office.
Leanid Zubarau had no documents on him and told the policemen to read about him in Wikipedia. When the officer saw the writer’s photo and learnt that he was a U.S. citizen, Leanid Iosifavich was let off.
Leanid Zubarau is a Belarusian writer. He writes for children and the youth in Russian, English and Belarusian. He was the conductor of a folk music orchestra and VIA Bliukayuchyya Zorki. He moved to the USA in 1990. He is a member of the Union of Belarusian Writers and vice President of the Belarusian Association.
