At least 143 Belarusians were granted refugee status in Poland between January and April 2026, according to data from Poland’s Office for Foreigners. That is almost as many as during the whole of 2025, when 147 Belarusian citizens received refugee status.

The statistics reflect the number of decisions issued on applications filed by Belarusians. However, a single application may cover more than one person.

The sharp increase in new refugees may be linked to the arrival in Poland of a large group of political prisoners deported from Belarus at the end of 2025. Many of them are now going through, or have already completed, the process of obtaining international protection.

Since 2022, nearly 1,000 Belarusian citizens have been granted refugee status in Poland.

In addition, 354 Belarusians received subsidiary protection in Poland during the first four months of 2026. International protection was denied to 14 applicants, while another 79 cases were suspended.
