18:18 Belarus army to contract 50% of servicemen
50 / 50 is an ideal combination of conscripts and contracted servicement for the Belarusian army, according to the department of mobilization at the Ministry of Defense of Belarus. Interfax correspondents explain that the number of contracted soldiers should be increased because the level of military equipments and hardware has become more complicated and requires specific skills and education, which ordinary conscripts do not always have.
The Ministry of Defense is confident that the number of contracted servicemen will be increased by 50 percent before 2010.
Currently, the contracted servicemen amount to 23 percent of the total troops of the Belarus Army. Over 40 military stations or units have a 100 percent staff comprised of professional servicemen.
