19 people detained over illegal currency transactions in Belarus
The detentions took place primarily in Minsk and Minsk region.
The police detained a total of 19 people within three days (19-21 December) for violating the rules of foreign currency transactions in Belarus. Over $2000, Rur 26 000 and almost Br31 milllion were seized.
According to the press office of Interior Ministry, 11 cases were recorded in Minsk, 4 - in Minsk region, 3 - in Homel, 1 - in Mahilou region. In the capital city, a 52-year-old unemployed man, a 17-year-old student, a 31-year-old worker, and a 25-year-old sole entrepreneur.
The Interior Ministry recommends that citizens refrain from buying foreign currencies from private hands and reminds that apart from the fine (up to Br15 million), all the money will be seized as punishment for illegale foreign currency transactions.
Besides, illegal entrepreneurship associated with illegal currency transactions is subject to between 2 and 7 years in prison. Money foring is punishable with up 15 years in prison.
On December 19, Belarus intriduced a 30-percent fee on the purchase of foreign currencies. Many exchange offices report shortages in foreign currency supplies.
