2008 proposed as Year of Belarus's Statehood
A committee organizing for celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian People's Republic has been established by the Fatherland, a public group that coordinates ties with the Belarusian diasporas abroad.
Ivonka Survila, the Canada-based chairwoman of the council of the Belarusian People's Republic, has been elected as an honorable chairperson of the organizing committee.
The committee also includes renowned figures from among the Belarusian intelligentsia and prominent Belarusians from abroad. Genadz Buraukin, Radzim Garetski and Aliaksej Marachkin have been elected as co-chairmen of the committee.
The organizers have proposed to declare the year of 2008 as the Year of Belarus's Statehood. Celebrations could be a good opportunity to mark the nation-building importance of the Independence Act on March 25, 1918.
