Belarus does not violate Energy Charter threatening to suspend gas transit

An analyst Syarhei Chaly has expressed the opinion in an interview with ERB. According to the expert, Russia… “is to blame for it” as it was against the Energy Charter: Chaly: "We signed it but the Ratification Agreement has not been signed so far. It means that it has not come into power yet. It was Russia’s position. Russia thought that the Charter was directed against it. So we did not ratify it as an ally”.

That is why, in the expert’s opinion, Belarus will not account for the violation of a document it has not ratified. Furthermore, Mr. Chaly has drawn attention to the fact that all agreements on gas supplies from Russia were signed by European states and Belarus did not take part in them.

Let us remind you that the Secretary-General of the Energy Charter Andre Mernier reacted to Alyaksandr Lukashenka’ statement about the suspension of the transit of Russian gas across Belarus to Europe. The European representative claimed that the Belarusian leader did not have a right to suspend gas transit because it contradicted to the Energy Charter
