CEC rejects transparent ballot boxes from Belarus entrepreneurs
The Central Election Commission (CEC) will not accept transparent ballot boxes [offered by Belarusian entrepreneurs], CEC chairwoman Lidziya Yarmoshyna said in a statement on December 9, reports Belapan. CEC is not a commercial entity, she stressed.
Yarmoshyna advised businessmen who wish to assist in procuring transparent ballot boxes to wire the money to the off-budget election fund. So far, no money has come in to the account, she said.
Viktar Harbachou, head of the committee to organize For a Free Development of Entrepreneurship association, said earlier that entrepreneurs from across Belarus could assist electoral commissions in equipping polling stations with transparent ballot boxes. He also said that a 'certain quantity' had already been produced in Barysau, Zhlobin, Homel, Mahilyou and Fanipal.
Campaign for Free Election coordinator Siarhei Kaliakin reckons it is in line with the law for entrepreneurs to pass transparent ballot boxes to electoral commissions.
