Criminal responsibility to be preserved for unregistered organizations
Representatives of the unregistered NGO Assembly came to the House of Representatives today. They wondered whether the House was going to cancel article #193.1 of the Criminal Code. Let us remind you that this article forbids acting on behalf of unregistered organizations and punishes its members severely. This law is on the list of EU’s main complaints about the human rights situation in Belarus.
A deputy of the standing committee for human rights Yauhen Melnikau did not give any certain reply to the activists. A participant of the meeting, lawyer Yury Chavusau, has informed ERB about it:
Chavusau: "The result was expected. We did not get any certain information from the representative of the commission. There were careful phrases that maybe it would be necessary to cancel the article”.
According to Mr. Chavusau, the deputy did not even manage to answer whether the issue of cancellation of the article was being discussed. Meanwhile, deputies used to plan to reconsider it, says Chavusau.
