David Kremer: European Union could join EU sanctions
A former US Assistant Secretary for human rights, democracy and labour David Kremer has informed Radio “Liberty” about it. Let us remind you that the US President Barrack Obama has prolonged the sanctions imposed on the Belarusian administration. In response to it, the official Minsk claimed that it considered cancellation of the sanctions a fundamental term needed to resume the dialog with Washington.
According to Kremer, the United States supported the attempts of the European Union to involve the Belarusian regime in a dialogue and cooperation, but they expected some liberalization of the political system in response to it. In Kremer’s opinion, the release of political prisoners was only one step, although it was very important. The American politician thinks that the European Union had to preserve some sanctions imposed on Belarus. Unfortunately, the European Union cancelled all its sanctions imposed on Minsk two weeks after the parliamentary elections.
As a result, the pressure on Lukashenka’s regime was eased. Kremer has expressed a hope that the European Union may resume some of its previous sanctions imposed on Minsk when it considers its relations with Belarus this autumn.
