EU accepted 79,000 refugees in 2009

Nearly 318,000 people sought political asylum in the West in 2009, but just a quarter of them were granted the status of refugees, reports ВВС. According to Eurostat, this is an increase by 3000 people than in the year before. In 2009, 13500 Somalians were accepted as refugees, follwed by 13000 Iraqis, 7000 Afgans and 5700 people from Russia.

The UK takes the lead among the countries of the European Union with 12500 refugees. Germany accepted 12000 people; France -- 12000 refugees in 2009.
