European Council watching the trial of “Novy Chas” newspaper
The European Council hopes that the trial of “Novy Chas” will correspond to international obligations of Belarus in the field of the freedom of the press. The announcement was made by Christina Galah, the press secretary of the Secretary General of the EU Council Xavier Solana. Let us remind you that the appeal to the newspaper and a journalist Alyaksandr Tanmkovich was sent to Pershamaiski District Court of Minsk by general and senator Mikalai Charhinets.
He opposes to an article printed in the edition and demands to fine the newspaper for 500 million rubles and the journalist – for 100 million rubles. The trial will start at 3 p.m. today.
Galah noted that the EU Council “was watching the investigation of the case”. “Freedom of the press is one of the most important terms in negotiations with the Belarusian authorities”, - stressed Xavier Solana’s press secretary.
