European Parliament to decide on which conditions to allow giving credit to Belarus
EP Committee on Foreign Affairs has discussed the strategy of the European Investment Bank with regard to different countries including those invited to the Eastern Partnership on October 28. This was informed to Euroradio by the Chairman of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Belarus Jacek Protasiewicz:
"Finnish deputy Heidi Hautala, the Chairwoman of EP Subcommittee on Human Rights, and I have suggested an amendment. According to it, financial support to the Eastern Partnership countries should be rendered not only upon estimation of economic reforms, but also the situation with human rights and democracy".
This opinion will be discussed in the EP Economics Committee. The final decision is expected in November at the EP plenary session.
Let us remind you, the EU Council of Ministers has stated in the resolution on Belarus on October 25 that the EU can consider the issue of providing macrofinancial assistance to Belarus. Apart from the Council of Ministers' consent on that there should also be a consent of the European Parliament, since Lisbon Treaty has come into force.
