Human rights activists get small fines for protesting against death penalty
Human rights defenders Valyantsin Stefanovich, Iryna Toustsik and Ales Byalyatski were today punished with a $6 fine for staging an unauthorized picket near the presidential administration, Belapan reported. They had to spend a night a police detention facility and released after the trial. Journalist Sergei Sys was released without charges in the evening of March 23.
The activists came to the building of the presidential administration, wearing T-shirts with 'blood stains' and holding a poster that said: No to Death Penalty!.
Belarus recently executed two men who were sentenced to capital punishment in 2009.
The execution has drawn protests from the Council of Europe, Amnesty International and local human rights activists.
