"I have a new life now". Story of a Syrian who will soon return home
Syrian actor talks about emigration and returning home
For the first time in many years, Syria has experienced a change of power. Longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad has left his post and fled to Russia.
During his many years in power, Assad turned Syria into one of the poorest countries in the world, imprisoning thousands of innocent people and forcing millions to emigrate.
Also fleeing the country was Shehab Fatoum, a Syrian actor who has been away from his homeland for almost 10 years and now has a chance to return home.
His story is similar to that of many Belarusians.
"I have a new life now, I am free."
Shehab left Syria in 2015 after a long, peaceful civilian struggle against Assad. The regime threatened him and his entire family, and even came close to killing him. He now lives in Aachen, Germany, where he plays in the state theater and also acts in films.
"I was first granted asylum in Germany and recently received German citizenship. I am now very relieved about the fall of Assad's empire, and believe me, neither the word "relief" nor any other word can describe what I feel. I was born in a place where a dictator was in power and now he is gone! I have a new life now, I am free".
