Jerzy Buzek: Presidential elections to define future relations between Belarus and EU

Presidential elections in Belarus will become the crucial point for further development of relations between Belarus and the European Union. This was stated by EP President Jerzy Buzek on September 22. In the statement, according to BelaPAN, he approved invitation of ODIHR/OSCE experts to observe the electoral campaign in Belarus and declared his hope their work would not be restricted.

The EP leader appealed that Belarusian authorities should grant equal conditions for all the contenders at the stage of registration, and formation of elections commissions at all levels. He also asked to grant reliability of pre-term voting and transparency of procedure of counting of votes.

Buzek expressed his worries with regard to the situation with the freedom of media in Belarus and appealed that Belarusian authorities should provide all the candidates with equal access to media and stop harassment and pressure of independent journalists.

Moreover, the EP leader appealed that democratic forces should unite. He assured that EU countries sincerely support longing of Belarusians to live in a free, democratic and independent country.
