K. Stewart: Lukashenka will have to take his main exam in readiness for changes in autumn
If the Belarusian authorities want to make the USA weaken its sanctions and to improve relations they will have to release all political prisoners and conduct free elections to the House of Representatives. According to her, the elections to the House of Representatives “will become the main exam meant to check whether Lukashenka is ready for changes”.
The Ambassador Karen Stewart informed about it from Washington where she has been staying since the Belarusian authorities made her and the majority of her staff leave Belarus, the country the USA considers to be “the last dictatorship in Europe”.
"We are still eager and ready to consider all means of improving our relations. However, everything depends on the steps the Belarusians authorities are ready to make in connection with their attitude to human rights, because this attitude is the basis of our sanctions”, - said Ms. Stewart.
