Kazakevіch: Several thousand people may be on “black list” but what for?
The European Union’s “black list” will produce a symbolic effect on Belarusian officials. However, it will not remain unnoticed. Andrei Kazakevich, a political scientist, has expressed the opinion in an interview with Euroradio.
Kazakevich: It is a symbolic step in the first place and it will rather produce a physiological effect than a real one. At least, it will indicate that the European Union has paid attention to them because their actions are qualified as a violation of human rights. I think that it will affect the majority of them in some way. It is difficult to predict the final reaction.
Let us remind you that 158 people are on the list. In the expert’s opinion, the big number could result in occasional people on the list.
Kazakevich: As far as I understand, the list consists of people involved in some violations and some of them got included there because of formal signs. There are people who can be considered occasional among those on the list due to formal signs. However, I think that it is inevitable in any case if you consider a more or less big list.
At the same time Mr. Kazakevich does not think that it is necessary to expand the EU’s “black list”.
Kazakevich: In the wide sense, meaning those involved in the election rigging and human rights violations, the list should be expanded by a few thousands. However, the question about the approach arises. Is there any sense in expanding the list so much?
Let us remind you that the Belarusian authorities claimed that they would prepare an adequate response to the measures taken by the European Union and the United States.
