Monument to Barbara Radziwill and Sigismund Augustus to appear in Vilnius
The design of the monument to Barbara Radziwill and Sigismund Augustus
A monument to Barbara Radziwill and Sigismund Augustus will appear in Vilnius. The sculptor Gediminas Perkinas has seen their love story in a very peculiar way: on the pedestal there are two golden skulls, one bigger and one smaller.
"It seems to transform the Shakespearean myth of Romeo and Juliet, recalling the fate of Barbara and Sigismund, the love between them, smery and life. The work... is provocative, raises many questions, so I have no doubt that it will arouse curiosity and fascination of both Vilnius residents and guests of the capital," says Valdas Puteikis, a member of the expert and specialized commission, journalist.
The monument will be placed in the courtyard of the Vrublevskis' Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
The rich woman who wrote plays - fantastic facts about Ursula Radziwill
Barbara Radziwill was the Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania, the second wife of Sigismund II Augustus. She died at the age of 30, six months after her coronation. It is believed that the woman was poisoned because many people opposed the strengthening of the Radziwills, to whom the union of Barbara and Sigismund offered endless opportunities for influence.
In the park near the Niasvizh palace there is a ghost of Barbara Radziwill - the Black Lady of Niasvizh.
