Monument opens at Yana Palyakova’s grave in Salihorsk
A monument has been opened at the grave of a human rights activist Yana Palyakova in Salihorsk (Minsk Province) today, on October 8. It has been created with the help of public funds, notes BelaPAN.
12 human rights activists from Minsk and Salihorsk took part in the opening ceremony and laid flowers on Palyakova’s grave. They lit candles and commemorated her during a minute’s silence.
Let us remind you that Salihorsk District Court returned Paluyakova guilty of a faked denunciation of a policeman on March 3, 2009. She was sentenced to two and a half years of restriction of liberty.
Palyakova claimed to be innocent and said that the policemen had beaten her. “Soviet Byelorussia” published a satirical article where her name was mentioned on March 6, 2009. In the opinion of the human rights activist’s friends, the article was the last straw: the 36-year-old woman committed suicide.
