Opposition to commemorate missing Gen Zakharanka on May 7
The United Civic Party said it plans to stage an action in Minsk on May 7 to commemorate ten years since General Yury Zakharanka disappeared without a trace. The action is timed to coincide with the European Union summit in Prague.
Yury Zakharanka became one of the prominent opposition leaders after resigning from the post of the interior minister. He went missing on May 7, 1999 near his house. According to testimonies of Aleh Alkayeu, former chief of detention facility No 1 and currently a political immigrant, Zakharanka was kidnapped and executed by the so called "death squad".
The action will take place in the Belarusian capital, regardless of whether Alexander Lukashenka goes to Prague or remains in Minsk, reports Charter'97.
