OSCE Parliamentary Assembly adopts resolution on Belarus
The resolution on the situation in Belarus previously approved of by the committee on political refugees and security of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly was adopted today, on the last day of the session in Kiev.
Representatives of Belarus and Russia voted contra. In this resolution the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE urges the Belarusian government “to make use of the EU initiative on good-neighbourly relations”, and stick to international obligations and principles of a free and democratic state “including measures aimed at improving the situation listed in the unofficial document of the European Commission”.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly urges the Belarusian government “to make amendments to the Election Code” and let OSCE “participate in supervision of all future elections”. Furthermore, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly calls upon Belarusian authorities “to respect the right for the freedom of thought and for access to independent information in national and international mass media”. The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly also urges the Belarusian government “to release all political prisoners and start an independent investigation of missing people’s cases”.
