PACE Chairman: Unfortunately we have seen no positive steps of Belarus
According to the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlut Cavusogly, Belarus still fails to recognise European values. He made this statement at the press-conference in Strasbourg, dedicated to opening of another PACE session, on October 4. According to BelaPAN, Cavusoglu underlined the Assembly wanted to provide Belarus with the Special Guest status. The PACE leader reminded he was one of the Assembly deputies who was for development of dialogue between the Council of Europe and Belarus since 2003. The number of PACE members who supported the idea of Belarusian-European dialogue, increased. However, execution of two death sentences in the country demolished the positive atmosphere, said Cavusoglu.
According to the politician, he has no expectations from Belarus during the presidential campaign, but hopes the country will start taking the necessary steps after the elections.
Let us remind you, the last PACE resolution was the reaction on death penalties of the 25-year-old Andrej Zhuk and 30-year-old Vasil Juzepchuk, executed this March.
