Polish parliament speaker vows support to independent media in Belarus
Polish parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski has promised that he will be trying to render support to the independent media in Belarus, especially the BELSAT television channel. He made this statement to reporters in Warsaw on Friday after meeting Anzhalika Borys, the leader of the unrecognized Union of Poles in Belarus.
Komorowski explained what the Polish parliament could do for the Polish minority in Belarus. The parliament 'can express solidarity and react quickly to the repressions, pass a resolution that will list the sanctions against the official Minsk". The speaker explained that the sanctions "would not necessarily lead to the hault in cooperation with Belarus but could for example block loans for Minsk".
He also promised financial assistance to the independent media.
Anzhalika Borys commented on Alexander Lukashenka's statement during his meeting with Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski on February 25 in Kiev. "This is the first step towards improving the relations between the government and the Union of Poles", she said. Lukashenka promised to set up a group of experts in order to sort out the problems around the Union of Poles.
