Political prisoner Statkevich calls Belarusians to civil resistance
He suggested that voters write on the ballot about their rejection of "ruling regime policy".
Belarusian political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, who is in the Mahiliou prison, has handed an appeal to Belarusians. In it, he expressed his gratitude to all those who joined the initiative group to nominate him candidate for presidency in Belarus (more than 1,700 people across the country). As you know, it was not registered by the CEC.
According to Mr Statkevich, participation of the opposition in the last presidential campaign made sense only when viewed as a confrontation with the "show, in which the authorities turned the elections" and attempts to "return the country to democracy." Now, the political prisoner is convinced, alternative candidates do not set such a task, and he does not see "much point in participation." Moreover, the participation of part of the opposition in the elections "makes the boycott ineffective."
"In such circumstances, I call on those who do not agree with the role of extras in the another performance to civil resistance," said Mikalai Statkevich in his address. He called on those who will come to the polling stations to make a record on the ballot "which would clearly testify to the rejection of the policy of the ruling regime." The political prisoner believes that "if the signal is big, it will reach the destination," BelaPAN reports.
The ex-presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich has been in prison since December 2010. In May 2011, he was sentenced to six years imprisonment in the colony "for the organization of mass disorder." Mr Statkevich is to be released in December 2016. International organizations have recognized him as a political prisoner.
