Popular Front youth begins campaign for free media
The youth wing of the Popular Front has announced an action in support of private newspapers that cover social and political issues. Anton Kalinouski, a deputy chairman of the Popular Front's Youth has filed an application for a picket in support of independent newspapers that is planned to take place on December 23 on Jakub Kolas Square in Minsk. In the view of Anton Kalinouski, the fact that the government has allowed Nasha Niva and Narodnaya Volya to return to the national distribution system does not mean that the situation has changed on the whole. There are dozens of newspapers that are not allowed to print and be distributed in this country. Journalists with independent radio stations are denied accreditation for their legal operation. Additionally, the youth that publish local unregistered newspapers risk detention or huge fines.
