President of European Parliament admits that European Union will face crisis
The refusal of the majority of inhabitants of Ireland to support the Lisbon Agreement at a referendum “has plunged Europe into a crisis” that will delay its expansion, claims the President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering. "It will be impossible to accept new members except Croatia if the agreement is not ratified”, - he said. Mr. Pottering supports the idea of taking political decisions with the help of Parliaments in the EU. “Parliaments should take political decisions. If citizens do not agree to decisions taken by their Parliaments, they will be able to vote for another party or another politician during elections», - claimed Pottering.
53.4% of inhabitants of Ireland voted contra the Lisbon Agreement and 46.6 voted pro on June 12. Ireland is the only EU member state to have organized a referendum to approve the agreement. The other EU member states are ratifying the document with the help of their Parliaments.
