Belarus celebrates Victory Day
German Capitulation Act came into force on May 9, 1945. The world considers this date a day of victory over fascism.
Belarus, which was a part of the USSR during the World war II, is considered a territory which suffered the most from the military actions. According to some calculations, 1 million 300 thousand Belarusians fought at the fronts of this war. Every third inhabitant of the country died, this includes peaceful citizens. Many cities, towns and villages were ruined. About 2 million Belarusians were involved in forcible work by the fascists.
Heroes of Brest fortress committed a real act of bravery in the first days of the war. Belarus became famous for its guerrilla movement - 374 thousand people joined it. 70 thousand people fought against the fascists in the underground.
