Belarusian language not to return to history and geography lessons
At least not on September 1, 2012.
Deputy Minister of Education Kazimir Faryno has informed the newspaper “Zvyazda” about it.
Let us remind you that Minister of Education Syarhei Maskevich claimed a few days ago that they were going to restore Belarusian-language history and geography lessons at schools. It was abolished in 2006.
However, deputy Minister Faryno says that there is not enough money to do it on September 1. According to the official, 1.3 billion roubles is needed to provide fifth-formers with textbooks. At the same time, the history of Belarus is taught starting from the fifth until the 11th form. That is why more than 10 billion roubles is needed to provide all pupils with textbooks.
Faryno has also claimed that children and pupils have the right to choose the language in which they can study the history of Belarus. About 18% of Belarusian pupils study the history of Belarus in their mother tongue now. The number only reaches 5% in city schools.
