Christians celebrate Easter today
This is the holiday of Resurrection of crucified Jesus Christ, it has a special meaning - victory over sin and death.
Initially Christian Easter and Jewish Pesah coincided. In the year 325 at the 1st Ecumenical Nicene Council it was decided to celebrate Easter on the first week after the Spring equinox and the full moon, upon condition it wouldn't coincide with the Jewish Pesah.
Easter is a flexible-date holiday. It is calculated by the Christian Orthodox Church in accordance with the Julian calendar, and by the Catholic Church - in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. Depending on the month's calendar, the holiday is usually celebrated within the period from April 4 till May 8. Easter has a status of a state holiday in the Republic of Belarus.
There are many Easter traditions, among which - cooking a special Easter cake, painting eggs and taking them to a Church for blessing. An egg painted red symbolizes Christ's crucifixion.
