EP President urges to release Belarusian political prisoners
European Parliament President Martin Schulz met today in Strasbourg with Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle.
They discussed the situation in Belarus. Following the meeting, President Schulz made a statement.
He is appalled by the deteriorating situation in Belarus regarding human rights and political freedoms. The European Parliament President urges to release Syarhei Kavalenka who is on hunger-strike in jail. The Belarusian authorities will have blood on their hands if he dies, notes Martin Schulz. He has also urged the official Minsk to free and rehabilitate all remaining political prisoners.
Schulz has repeated his personal appeal to President Lukashenka to pardon Uladzislau Kavalyou and Dzmitry Kanavalau. He has called on Belarus to introduce a moratorium on capital punishment.
