Victoria Azarenka may become World No. 1 again
She only needs to win in the Wimbledon semi-final for it.
Let is remind you that Victoria Azarenka (World No. 2) will have to compete with American Serena Williams there (World No. 6). Angelique Kerber (8th) from Germany will compete with Agnieszka Radwanska (3rd) from Poland in the other semi-final. The matches will be played on July 5.
Maria Sharapova, World No. 1, has already dropped out and may lose her position. All the rest is math. Sharapova added 545 points to her rating in the first four stages. She has 10035 points now. Victoria Azarenka has already scored 1045 points at the Wimbledon Championships (545+500 for the victory in the quarter final). She has 9845 points now. However, unlike Sharapova, Aazarenka keeps playing. If she wins in the semi-final, she will receive 900 points and it will be enough to leave Sharapova behind. A victory in the final gives 2000 points (defeat in the final gives 1400 points).
Only Polish Agnieszka Radwanska may be her rival in the struggle for the first position. She has 8275 points now (7230 points from the previous rankings + 1045 points scored at the Wimbledon). However, if Azarenka makes it to the final and gets defeated by the Polish player there, it will not prevent Victoria from becoming the World No. 1- she will have enough points (Victoria - 12145, Agnieszka - 11175).
The hardest goal is to defeated Serena Williams. Azarenka has only managed to defeat her once so far.
Let us note that the Belarusian used to top to the WTA rankings for 19 weeks on end - from January 30 to June 11, 2012.
