Rigoni: Parliamentary elections a stage of Belarus-EU ties normalization
The parliamentary election will be an important stage for the development of Belarus and normalisation of its relations with the council of Europe and European Union, PACE rapporterur on Belarus Andrea Rigoni said. He took part in the round-table discussion “Election Standards and Election Process in the Republic of Belarus” organized by the PACE and the National Assembly on May 18.
It is essential to improve the election practice because it will promote democracy in Belarus, Rigoni noted.
Belarusian representatives should be invited to all PACE events dedicated to elections and ‘Belarus should join PACE in the future’, the PACE rapporteur on Belarus thinks.
The majority and the opposition should be represented in Parliament for its normal work and both sides should be prepared for a debate, Andrea Rigoni added.
The only way for promoting European standards in Belarus is the step-by-step approach of Strasbourg and Minsk, the rapporteur said.
