Russia, Belarus to continue talks over electricity transit to Kaliningrad enclave on Jan 12
Representatives of the Russian company Inter RAO EES plan to continue talksover the transit of the Russian electricity through Belarus to Russia's Baltic sea enclave of Kaliningrad. An Inter RAO EES spokesman told the Russian news agency Ria Novosti that the Russian side hoped for a constructive and weighed dialogue which would allow to find an acceptable solution in the short period of time.
The Belapan news agency reports that on January 4 Belenergo company warned about a possible disruption of electricity supplies to the Kaliniingrad region since there was no new transit deal.
The Russian company Inter RAO ESS described the warning as blackmail. Boris Zverev, spokesman for Inter RAO EES said in a statement that before the New Year the Belarusian side had "demanded to raise by almost 2.5 times the cost of the transit" in violation of the previous agreements. After the New Year, Belarus has sought to raise electricity transit costs by almost 2.5 times more.
