Štefan Füle: EU will increase support of Belarusian civil society
The European Union will increase support of the Belarusian civil society. The European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle said this in his speech in the Eastern Studies Center in Warsaw this Monday.
Füle stated that certain limits in the EU's policy in the framework of the Eastern Partmership could be explained by their attraction to the basic values. He gave an example of Belarus, where the European Union cannot fully participate in the reforms without this country's clear intention to conduct democratization and movement towards respect for human rights.
"On the other side, we cannot refuse to participate. EU's support of the Belarusian civil society will be increased and we will work to establish contacts between people", — BelaPAN quotes Füle's words.
The European Commissioner explained that such contacts would help the EU to create the basis for more ambitious moves, which would be possible in certain circumstances.
Füle noted that it depended on the progress in conducting election in Belarus how soon and to which extent the EU would participate in the reforms.
