Ukrainian national detained as a suspect in Politkovskaya case
A new suspect described as "a mademan from Ukraine" has emerged in the case of the murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, writes today Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
According to the newspaper, the 49-year-old Ukrainian national was arrested in Moscow several days ago. Investigators suspect this man, whose identity has not been revealed, of being linked to the killing of Politkovskaya. However, he has not been officially charged yet.
Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes that an investigator from the Russian Office of the Prosecutor General visited Ukraine and interrogated Nikolay Melnichenko, the former bodyguard of Leonid Kuchma and a key personality in the tape scandal that compromised the former Ukrainian president. Milnichenko was interrogated in connection with the Politkovskaya case.
Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead on October 7, 2006 when walking out from an elevator at her Moscow home.
The names of two suspects -- Shamil Burayev, the former administrator of a Chechen district, and Pavel Raguzov, a FSB officer -- have been officially named as of today. The both remain in detention.
