Will UN Security Council deal with missing Belarusians’ cases?

Leaders of the Belarusian opposition and civil community have sent a request to the UN Security Council. They are asking to investigate the cases of missing Belarusians – Yury Zaharanka, Victar Hanchar, Anatol Krasouski and Zmitser Zavadski.
Stanislau Shushkevich, Mechuslau Hryb, Andrei Sannikau, Ales Byalyatski, Mihail Marynich and others have signed the request. The letter has been sent to Foreign Ministers of theUN Security Council permanent member states – China, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and the USA.

The first Belarusian Ambassador to Germany Pyatro Sadouski said there had been such precedents in the international politics commenting on it for ERB:

Sadouski: "In particular, I signed the appeal that was sent to the head of the US Department of State Hillary Clinton and to the UN. There were such precedents. Like Sudan, and maybe Lebanon… there were precedents and it was effective in some way, it was discussed, etc. No matter what the effect is going to be, there is such a thing as political PR…”

As Sadouski noted, the decision of the UN committees and sub-committees do not have any legal power, but they are of political importance.

Sadouski: "If some governments and international organizations whose decisions may be obligatory make some steps after this action, it may be effective”.
