Belarusians mark Freedom Day on March 25. The independence of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR) was proclaimed on that day in 1918.
Freedom Day was only marked abroad or in secret in the Soviet time. Mass festivities started being organized in the 1990s. Head of the Supreme Council Stanislau Shushkevich and head of the BNR Coucnil Yazep Sazhych took part in the celebration of Freedom Day in 1993.
Mass festivities dated for Freedom Day were organized in Hrodna and Minsk yesterday.
