Photo fact: First human rights picket in Brest in 5 years
About two dozen people with posters demanding the freedom of speech, release of political prisoners and changes in the Labour Code gathered in the Park of International Warriors on December 10. Human rights activists and members of the independent trade union REP decided to remind Bresters about the International Human Rights Day.
The previous human rights picket was held in 2008, human rights activist Uladzimir Malei said. The City Executive Committee kept forbidding mass pickets afterwards.
Another street action was held in the stadium Lokomotiv parallel to the picket. Its participants distributed human rights declarations among passers-by. There were no incidents and even the police did not control either of the actions.
