Hearing of traffic police insult case postponed

The case is processed by Savetski District Court in Belarus capital city of Minsk. Judge Dzmitry Paulyuchenka, notoriously known for the trials against youth activists and independent journalists, presides at the hearing.


Andrei Semyanyuk who is facing charges of insulting an official has not pleaded guilty. The judge then appointed another hearing for May 31 so that the victim - traffic police inspector Martsinkevich - be present in the courthouse.


The conflict between IT engineer Andrei Semyanyuk and the traffic police inspector happened on May 11. According to Mr Semyanyuk, he saw that the policeman was about to fine a pensioner for crossing the road against the red light. He felt pity for the old man and reproached the officer. The policemen didn't like that, so Mr Semyanyuk was taken to the police department and presented with the 'insulting an official' charges.


Official representatives of the Traffic Police caim that Mr Semyanyuk was drunk. The latter denies the accusations, insisting an alcohol test was never run on him.
