Belarus bid farewell to Stanislau Shushkevich

The funeral ceremony for the first leader of independent Belarus, Stanislau Shushkevich, took place in Minsk. The politician was buried at the Northern cemetery under a white-red-white flag.
Shushkevich was 88 when he died on May 4. The funeral took place in the Archcathedral Church of the Virgin Mary on May 6-7. According to estimates of those present on the day of the funeral, about a thousand people came to bid farewell to the politician.
Shushkevich will remain in the history of Belarus as a scientist, politician and public figure. In 1991-1994, he was the head of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus. In December 1991, Stanislau Shushkevich signed the Belovezh Accords, which put an end to the Soviet Union and opened the way to the independence of Belarus. He considered the nuclear disarmament of Belarus his main political achievement.
