Opposition asks EU to help negotiate with Lukashenka
Five Belarusian opposition leaders have asked the EU to help restart internal negotiations about democratic reforms in Belarus.
The negotiations should include EU and OSCE intermediaries which may help adherents of reforms, euobserver.com refers to the politicians.
They have also urged the EU to demand better election standards at the parliamentary election in 2016. Oppositionists should be included in election committees to provide an open and transparent vote count.
The letter appeared after the EU had suspended sanctions imposed on Lukashenka and his circle for four months on Friday.
The appeal has been signed by Syarhei Kalyakin, Anatol Lyabedzka, Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, Pavel Sevyarynets and Mikalai Statkevich. Tatstsyana Karatkevich and Alyaksandr Milinkevich have refused to do it. The latter did it because ‘he had quit politics’.
