Political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich turns 57 on Aug 12
Ex-presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich has been behind bars since 2010.
Minsk's Lenin District Court sentenced Statkevich to 6 years in jail for mastermiding the 'December 19, 2010 mass riots'. The opposition politician was transferred to a prison in Mahilou in early 2012. Mikalai Statkevich continues to insist he is not guilty and has refused filing a clemency appeal to President Lukashenka.
Born in the Slutsk district of Minsk region, Statkevich graduated from Minsk Missile Air Defence College. He is a Master of Science. He headed the Association of Belarusian Military Men in early 1990s and became one of the leaders of the social democratic movement in our country.
