Unopposed candidate dies before local elections
The local elections will be cancelled in two constituencies, because the only candidates running for seats there have dropped out.
The mentioned candidates were supposed to run for seats in village councils, CEC chairperson Mikalai Lazavik said. One of the candidates died and the other had to withdraw for family reasons.
The law allows choosing a new candidate at least 20 days before the election, Lazavik noted. It means that no candidates will be elected in the mentioned election districts on March 23. Nevertheless, Lazavik did not exclude the possibility of a runoff. The term of such elections is not indicated in the law.
The local elections will be held on March 23. The early voting will start on March 18.
