Brest authorities forbid human rights picket
The action in support of Belarusian political prisoners was supposed to be held on August 10.
Human rights activist Uladzimir Vyalichkin applied for the picket in support of international warriors. Brest City Executive Committee refused him yesterday, he said. The refusal was explained by the fact that the date ‘had already been reserved for another event’.
Uladzimir Vyalichkin: "Builder Day will be marked in the park of international warriors on the same day. I have already asked the Executive Committee to send me the list of mass events planned in the city this year so that we could plan our actions accordingly.”
The mass rally application procedure has been simplified in Brest this year. The changes were introduced by the city administration. There is no need to sign agreements with the police if the organizers are going to keep the order on their own. However, it is still necessary to sign agreements with the ambulance hospital and the administration of the place where the action will be held. That is why the authorities are still able to forbid undesirable actions, human rights defenders say.
