EU obliges Serbia to impose sanctions on Russia
The country promised to coordinate its policy in complicated issues with the EU earlier.
Serbia will have to impose sanctions on Russia if its wants to join the EU, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn announced. Serbia promised to coordinate its policy with the EU in complicated issues during the EU membership negotiations. Russia sanctions are such an issue. The EU expects Belgrade to fulfill this demand, Hahn noted.
The European Commissioner understands that Russia and Serbia have historic connections. He does not want to force Serbia ‘make a simple choice’. However, Serbia is going to join the European Union and should stick to its values, he noted.
Serbia received the official status of a candidate for membership in the EU in March 2012.
