Israeli ambassador ready to meet Belarus opposition leaders
Israel's ambassador in Minsk Joseph Shagal says he would like to discuss the problem of political prisoners.
There are no political prisoners in Belarus, all of them are criminals, Joseph Shagal told RTVI. Filmmaker Yury Hashchavatski urged to boycott the Israeli Ambassador in response to the statement.
Leader of the civil campaign Tell the Truth Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu sent the book Voice of Freedom from Behind the Bars to Israeli Ambassador Joseph Shagal today. The book contains collected stories written by political prisoners including Nyaklyayeu himself.
The politician hopes that Shagal “will understand the actual political reality of Belarus”. He also passed a letter to the Israeli Prime Minister, asking if the Ambassador’s statement concerning Belarusian political prisoners was Israel’s’ official position.
Nyaklyayeu managed to meet the Ambassador, BelaPAN reports. According to the politician, Joseph Shagal said that it was a misunderstanding: “He said one thing but journalists misunderstood it”. The diplomat is ready to meet Belarusian opposition leaders “to clarify the position” at any moment.
